Compare Synthetic Oil vs. Regular Oil

oil change on a car

The Mtn. View Chevrolet service center team often gets asked, “What’s the difference between synthetic oil vs. regular oil? If you’ve been scratching your head and aren’t clear about synthetic vs. conventional oil, you’re in the right place. Read on to learn more, then reach out to us with any questions or to schedule service at our dealership in Chattanooga.

What is Conventional (Regular) Motor Oil?

Conventional motor oil is often called regular oil. It’s a petroleum-based fluid used in internal combustion engines to lubricate internal components and reduce engine stress. Motor oil comes from crude oil mined from the ground. Aside from lubrication, it also protects your vehicle’s engine from high temperatures as you drive around Ooltewah.

What is Synthetic Oil?

Synthetic oil is also petroleum-based, but it provides enhanced lubrication and is more stable. That’s because synthetic oils oxidize less quickly than regular oils and retain protective properties better. They’re chemically manufactured from petrochemicals to provide properties that make them superior to conventional oils. Synthetic oils also:

  • Offer enhanced engine cleaning properties
  • Are less viscous at lower temperatures
  • Cost more than conventional oil
  • Are better at protecting critical turbocharger parts

Full Synthetic Oil vs. Synthetic Blends

In addition to synthetic oils and regular oils, there are synthetic blends of motor oil. When comparing full synthetic oil vs. synthetic blends, note that synthetic blends are a hybrid oil made up of part synthetic oil and part conventional oil. Synthetic oil blends are less expensive than full synthetic oil but still deliver enhanced properties over conventional oil. Some cars require full synthetic oil, and some don’t. Check your owner’s manual to be sure. You can also contact our service advisors if you’re in doubt about the type of motor oil your new Chevy requires.
