Midsize sedans are a popular choice for those who want plenty of space and high-tech features without the size and expense of an SUV. Two of the most popular choices in this category are the Chevy Malibu and the Ford Fusion. Here’s how the 2018 models of these vehicles compare.
Both the 2018 Chevy Malibu and Ford Fusion received the five-star overall safety rating from the National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration, but the Fusion ranked lower than the Malibu in the front crash and rollover tests. The Malibu also has several class-exclusive safety features, including a reminder that alerts drivers when children are in the backseat. The Teen Driver function allows parents to set limits on speed and stereo volume associated with a specific key. In fact, U.S. News and World Report named it as the best new car for teens.
A three-year/36,000-mile basic warranty and a five-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty is the standard for each of these vehicles. However, the 2018 Chevy Malibu edges out the 2018 Ford Fusion in the J. D. Power and Associates Predicted Reliability study. It’s rated as above average for reliability among cars in its class, while the Fusion is merely average.
Midsize sedans get points for drivers who want cars with the latest tech features. While both cars deliver in this regard, offerings in the 2018 Chevy Malibu are a bit more generous. If you step up from the base model, you’ll have access to the brand’s MyLink infotainment system with both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Depending on the trim, it comes with either a 7-inch or 8-inch touchscreen as well as Bluetooth and USB connectivity, a wireless hot spot for charging on the go, and a rearview camera. On a similar trim of the 2018 Ford Fusion, you’ll find an infotainment system with eight-inch touchscreen and smartphone integration.
If class-leading fuel economy is an important consideration, there’s no better midsize choice than the Chevy Malibu. It gets an EPA-estimated 27 city/37 hwy miles per gallon, or 22/32 if you opt for the Premier trim. With the Ford Fusion, you’ll be spending a bit more with fuel economy rated at 21/32 city/highway miles per gallon, or 17/26 if you choose the V6. Both sedans are also available in a hybrid version. When it comes to performance, reviewers note that the Malibu delivers a quiet, smooth ride that makes it an excellent commuter car.
