In a stuffed midsize crossover segment, the Chevrolet Traverse has managed to stand out with more of what customers want in their SUVs: lots of interior space for maximum occupancy, with the fuel efficiency of a sedan. The years 2017 and 2018 are significant in the Traverse’s production history. While the 2017 model year marks the end of the nameplate’s first cycle, the 2018 model year marks the start of the second. Although each iteration has a slight advantage in an area or two over the other, both versions of the midsize crossover share a number of attributes that make either of them worth considering for a purchase.

Seat Accommodation

Considering that it is in a very competitive class, the Chevrolet Traverse is distinctive in the midsize crossover segment in that it has three rows of seats, instead of the customary two. Also, with the 2018 model, there’s more passenger space, since Chevrolet adds 2 inches of wheelbase and 7/10th of an inch to the overall length. On the upper-level trims, the second row comprises a pair of captain’s seats, instead of the bench-style seat at the third row, thus keeping maximum seating at seven people. Still, that’s better than the standard two-row scheme of the midsize crossover SUV, which accommodates up to five people. Plus, if you go with a lower-level trim, the second row is transformed to a bench-style seat, which increases maximum occupancy to eight.

Cargo Space

Regarding the trunk, the 2017 Chevrolet Traverse has one that yields 24.4 cubic feet. If you fold down the third-row seat, you can expand cargo space into the cabin, thus producing 70.3 cubic feet. And if both the second and third row are folded down, cargo space is maxed out at 116.3 cubic feet. On the 2018 Traverse, max cargo space is reduced to 98.5 cubic feet. (Standard trunk space is measured at 23 cubic feet.) Ultimately, though, the Traverse—whether in its 2017 or 2018 incarnation—offers abundant space for luggage; indeed, it supplies more than many of their rivals.

Ride and Handling

The Chevrolet Traverse is renowned for its car-like driving feel, which is expected from a crossover. Main credit is due to a hollow stabilizer bar-fortified all-wheel independent suspension, which consists of a MacPherson strut design with hydraulic control arm ride bushing at the front and a five-link design with spring aids at the back for cushioning you against road turbulence. Electric power steering provides crisp, accurate turns. And while the 2017 Traverse uses a 6-speed automatic transmission for convenience of gear shifting, the 2018 model debuts a 9-speed automatic transmission to provide better mpg ratings. Also new for the Traverse in 2018 is a switch-mode device that allows you to switch between front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive. That way, it can switch from an everyday ride to one that is primed for the outdoors.
