The Camaro has been flying down the highway for a half-century. True, today’s versions don’t bear much resemblance to the curvy, round-headlight and swoop rear window styling of the 60s and 70s, but this model has successfully evolved while many of its competitors have faded away and vanished. It’s the ultimate American sports coupe or convertible, and the 2018 model brings a new look that is worth investigating.

As the 2017 models disappear from the dealer lots, it’s still a good idea to check out what last year’s Camaro has to offer. If the price is right, the buyer gets a great deal. Most of the standard features are carried over to the 2018 model year, but there are a few tweaks the potential buyer should be aware of.

Engine and Powertrain

The 2018 Chevrolet Camaro base trim and LT trim are powered by a 2.0L turbocharged engine that puts out 275 horsepower. Buyers can, however, opt for the more powerful V6 with its 335-horsepower output. The 6.2L V8 is rated at 455 horsepower and is available on the 1SS trim. Finally, there’s a supercharged V8 that pumps out 650 horsepower, and this engine is found under the hood of the ZL1 trim. All trims are rear-wheel drive. The 2017 Camaro is equipped with the same engine lineup. Six-speed manual transmission is standard on the base trims, but an eight-speed automatic is available as well. The 2017 and 2018 model year ZL1 trims can be purchased with a 10-speed automatic transmission.

High-Tech Features

A rearview camera, keyless entry and ignition, Bluetooth, OnStar, and a 7-inch screen display with the Chevy MyLink system is standard on the 2018 Camaro base trim. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are also included. Satellite radio is standard as well. The nine-speaker Bose audio system is part of the Technology package, which also includes a larger screen display. The 2017 Camaro 2LT trim includes the Technology package and offers the Convenience package with its head-up display and full driver awareness systems. The 2018 Camaro 2LT can be ordered with the same package, but this year it includes upgraded driver memory functions and a new wireless smartphone charging system.

Trim Options and Standard Features

Both the 2017 and 2018 Camaro are available in a total of six trims, all of which can be purchased as a coupe or convertible. The 2018 model has a special RS package available on the lower trims. This package includes 20-inch wheels, LED taillights, xenon headlights, and a rear decklid spoiler. This package is also available on the 2017 model, but the actual appearance of the spoiler and taillights is different because of design changes for 2018. The 20-inch wheels are an option without the package on most of the uplevel 2018 trims.

The Camaro has always appealed to the buyer who appreciates more than just muscle in a four-seat coupe or convertible. The raw engine power and throaty roar are just a part of the story. There’s also the latest in high-tech and safety systems. Check out both the 2018 and 2017 trims at our dealership, and call ahead for the latest inventory information.
