If you’re in the market for a full-size family-friendly sedan, you can’t go wrong with the Chevrolet Impala. It’s been a bestseller for years, and owners love the spacious interior, comfortable ride, and long list of standard features across all trim levels. Recently, Chevrolet decided that it was time to upgrade the high-tech features, so if the infotainment and safety systems are important to you, this is a great buy.
Except for a few additions to the standard equipment on all trims, the 2018 model isn’t much different from the outgoing 2017 model. There’s a few new color schemes you’ll want to check out, and the large 8.0-inch screen display is now offered even on the base trim. This sedan is still one of the most comfortable, easy-to-drive models in its segment, and after taking it for a test drive, you’ll see why Impala owners are among the most loyal you’ll ever meet.
You get the choice of two different engines on the 2018 Chevrolet Impala. The base LS and uplevel LT trims are fitted with a 2.5L inline-4 engine that makes a total of 196 horsepower. The more luxurious Premier trim comes with a 3.6L V6 engine that generates 305 horsepower. This engine is optional on the lower trims. All Impala’s are front-wheel drive and have six-speed automatic transmission. With the V6 engine, acceleration is better than average for this sedan segment. The ride is quite comfortable, and steering response is excellent.
The 2018 Chevrolet Impala is one of the roomiest sedans on the market, and the rear passengers will enjoy plenty of legroom. The wide, plush front seats are among the most comfortable you’ll ever settle into, and the appealing dual-cowl dashboard flows effortlessly into the side panels. Standard features on the base LS trim include cruise control, air conditioning, and an eight-way power-adjustable driver’s seat with power lumbar. The uplevel trims add on such niceties as heated mirrors, leatherette or leather upholstery, folding rear head restraints, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror. Several packages are available that include upgraded trim accents and ambient interior lighting.
The rearview camera is now standard on all three trim levels. If you choose the base LS trim, you get the large and easy-to-use 8.0-inch screen display, a trip computer, OnStar, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and a six-speaker sound system. Satellite radio is also standard. The uplevel trims come with a Bose premium audio system. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are also included regardless of trim level. Depending on the package you choose, you might also get the full array of exterior sensors without having to shell out much more dough.
Every 2018 Chevrolet Impala comes with antilock brakes, stability and traction control, the LATCH system of child seat anchors and tethers, and a full set of airbags including full-length side-curtain bags for the rear seating area. The included OnStar subscription comes with crash notification and an emergency assistance button. Optional on the base trim and standard with package purchase is the full set of front and rear sensors, forward collision warning, and lane-departure warning. The 2018 model crash scores are not available as of this summer, but the 2017 model received a perfect five stars for overall crash protection.
